SASA 2013

Established in 1999, the South Australian Screen Awards (or SASAs) exhibit, celebrate, support and promote South Australian talent through the presentation of 20 awards encompassing short film, online media, feature film and emerging local talent.

In the lead-up to the Gala Awards Night, the MRC runs ‘Best Of’ Screenings for all nominated and winning films which are later toured throughout regional South Australia.

Over the last decade the event has grown consistently alongside the local film industry. To reflect the growing amount of Web Projects being made in South Australia, the MRC has now introduced a Best Web Series Category for SASA 2013.

In 2013, we are also proud to announce a new SASA award – the MRC “Independent Vision” Award.

This award will recognise a South Australian filmmaker – of any age or experience – whose work in any format submitted to the SASA jury demonstrates “originality, innovation, risk, boldness and/or a singularity of vision.”

We are delighted to see this awards night becoming one of the most popular events in SA’s film industry calendar. There are some amazing prizes up for grabs at this year’s SASA Gala, so get your entry in early to avoid disappointment.

With the phenomenal amount of recognition South Australian filmmakers continue to receive in festivals around Australia and internationally, it is anticipated that the standard of entries is always very competitive.

“It is exciting to see so much quality filmmaking occurring in South Australia, and for our films to receive such critical attention nationally and worldwide is a credit to the emerging film industry in South Australia,” says Shane McNeil, MRC Manager of Programs and Development.

“The SASA Gala Awards allow emerging filmmakers to have an event where they can celebrate and enjoy their successes and achievements amongst their peers.”

This year’s Best of SASA Screenings will take place at The Mercury Cinema on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st of April.

This will be a festive family event where filmmakers and enthusiasts can sample the SASA nominated local films over the weekend.

The 2013 SASA Gala Awards night will be held at The Mercury Cinema on Wed 24th April.

This year’s theme is The Roaring 20s, inspired by Baz Luhrmann’s highly anticipated re-imagining of The Great Gatsby.
